In October 2022, Grambling State University appointed acclaimed musician Cordara Harper as Assistant Professor of Music Education and Director of University Choirs. To mark his new role and the choir’s 75th anniversary, Harper organized a celebratory concert titled “Be Optimistic: A Celebration of 75 Years of Singing Our Songs,” held on October 17 at the Conrad Hutchinson Jr. Performing Arts Center. The event featured a diverse repertoire, including spirituals, baroque, classical, and R&B pieces, and paid tribute to past directors, notably Professor Robert Williams, with a performance of his arrangement of “Wade in De Water.” Harper’s extensive background includes teaching at various educational levels, advanced studies in music education and choral conducting, and active involvement in music organizations.
